Lajares, a Surfer’s Village Between Volcanoes and the Ocean.
Lajares is a charming village of 1,200 inhabitants, nestled between the Atlantic waves and the volcanic landscapes of Fuerteventura. Despite its small size, it offers everything needed for a peaceful yet dynamic life: a supermarket, three surf shops, a library, and a lively village square. When it comes to dining, the village boasts two pizzerias and four restaurants serving both local and international cuisine.
To the north of the village, towards Corralejo, lies a series of volcanoes that formed around 50,000 years ago. Their eruptions expanded the islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, eventually giving birth to Lobos Island. Among them, Calderón Hondo stands out as one of the best-preserved craters. With a depth of 70 meters, it is easily accessible via several marked trails from Corralejo, Lajares, or the road connecting the two towns.
Reaching the summit is an unforgettable experience. From the viewpoint, you can admire the crater’s dramatic depth and take in breathtaking views of the surrounding volcanic landscape. Curious squirrels will likely approach, hoping for a snack, while large black crows and wild goats add to the rugged charm of this unique setting.
For those who wish to explore further, walking around the crater offers stunning panoramic views of northern Fuerteventura, including El Cotillo, Majanicho, and even Lanzarote. This easy and well-marked trail provides an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in the volcanic beauty of Fuerteventura..
